At Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s camp for hard-core lady-types, things are not what they seem. Three-eyed foxes. Secret caves. Anagrams. Luckily, Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are five rad, butt-kicking best pals determined to have an awesome summer together… And they’re not gonna let a magical quest or an array of supernatural critters get in their way! The mystery keeps getting bigger, and it all begins here. (Source: Goodreads)

5 best friends attend an all girls summer camp where strange things are beginning to happen. While other’s don’t believe them the girls know that the weird monsters and hidden messages they’ve found around the woods are real and they’re determined to get to the bottom of it. This first volume of Lumberjanes collects the first 4 issues of the series.

Lumberjanes excited me from day one, the first time I heard about it I knew I had to read it. This series has everything I love: cute art, cute stories, mystery, fantasy, supernatural, awesome friendships, and mostly cute art. The unfortunate thing is this book doesn’t have a lot of movement. I found it kind of stagnant and slow without any clear direction. While there was some great set-up it felt like the individual issues didn’t get anywhere because they were too busy being so damn cute that they weren’t really getting up to much of anything. So while I want to love this, I can’t go for it all the way – just most of the way.

The story follows 5 girls at a summer camp as they get up to some crazy hijinks. I can’t remember any of their names and I don’t remember any individual qualities of any of the girls. That’s not a great sign. They were collectively awesome, it’s just that none of them really stood out or had any really alone time to shine in this book. I think there’s room to correct this in the future so that’s at least something that could improve in future books.

Storywise, there is a lot going on it just doesn’t feel like it has any direction yet. The girls have encountered anagrams and hidden messages in the forest, which is super cool. There’s lots of smart humor in this with Fibonacci references at one point that definitely made me smile. It just felt kind of aimless at this point. This is probably going to be fixed in the future too so I’m not worried.

The art was so adorable in this. The girls all have these amazing badass designs which were exciting and awesome.

Overall I thought it was great but has some flaws that need to be fixed for me to really invest in the comic in the future.
